PATMOS'97
Seventh International Workshop Program
Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium
September 8-10, 1997
The PATMOS Workshop
The workshop is the seventh one of a series of international workshops,
originated from technical meetings of the European project Power And Timing
Modeling, Optimization and Simulation. PATMOS has over the years evolved
into a well established and outstanding open European event on power and
timing of integrated circuit design. The special increased interest in
low-power design gives an additional interest in this workshop. Despite its
growth, the workshop can still be considered as an informal but very
focused conference, featuring high level scientific presentations together
with open discussions and panel sessions, in a free and easy environment.
This special atmosphere has proven to be an excellent origin of new ideas
and interesting co-operations and projects.
This year program
The technical program for PATMOS 97 has the same
general structure as last editions, to consolidate a satisfactory
tradition, but, also simply because it has been proven to be adequate and
successful. The technical sessions are devoted to the most important and
up-to-date subjects concerning IC design and characterization, with
particular emphasis on power consumptions and signal delays, traditional to
the workshop. This year an increasing number of papers is dedicated to
devices and analog circuits, that represent an interesting expansion of a
field close to the traditional core of the Conference represented by
digital circuits and systems. The presentation of the contributed papers
will be accompanied by three Invited Talks, given by qualified speakers,
regarding the evaluation of power consumption at different levels and in
different contexts. In particular, the Invited Talks of this year are
dedicated to dissipation at instruction level, to power consumption in
mixed analog-digital circuits and to the point of view of industry on the
need of tools for power estimation. Furthermore, in the best workshop
tradition, a Panel of competent experts is included. Finally, for the first
time, a Discussion Group on a hot topic of general interest enters the
program. This year, the discussion is dedicated to the need of accepted and
significant benchmarks for power estimation. Naturally, discussions among
the participants are also an integral part of the Conference.
During the conference, we will have the pleasure to present research
cooperation programs supported by the European Commission, specially for the
South countries, and Central Europe and new independant States . An
industrial demo on the Mentor Graphics tool ELDO will also be organized
during the breaks.
A visit the
Comic Strip Museum of Brussels, a banquet in a charming area, and the
variety and imagination of Louvain-la-Neuve, a young city for an old
university, will certainly help in making the workshop more enjoyable.
Related events
A special
"Keep-In-Touch Day on Logic and Power Synthesis" is
organized in Louvain-la-Neuve, just the day after PATMOS'97, on Thursday
11. During this day, results and perspectives on two KIT projects supported
by the European Commission, with Brazil and Russia, will be presented.
Social events
Belgium is famous not only for its beers but also for its cartoons. Tintin,
Lucky Luke and the Schtroumph are our best ambassadors all over the world.
A visit of the Belgian cartoons museum will be organised on Monday evening
and a coktail will be offered by Alcatel Mietec. (This events is free of
charge).
The UCL (Université Catholique de Louvain ), which provides half of Belgium's francophone university graduates,
devotes the main part of its resources to the teaching of 20,000 students
in ten faculties spread across the main sectors.
DICE is the Microelectronic Laboratory of the Faculty of Applied Science at
UCL, and deals with the design, fabrication and testing of integrated
circuits. The design of ASICs in various application fields (image
processing, biomedical ...) is one of its major activities, along with more
fundamental areas: modelling of fabrication processes, design of novel
devices, mixed and analog ICs, design methodologies ...
ARAMIS asbl
ARAMIS (Association pour la Recherche Avancée en
Microélectronique et Intégration de Systèmes) is an inter-university
association, created in 1983, which gathers the Microelectronics
departments of four French-speaking universities in Belgium, i.e.
Faculté Polytechnique de Mons (FPMs), Université Libre de
Bruxelles (ULB), Université de Liège (ULg), Université
Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL). It is mainly subsidized by the
Ministry for New Technologies of the Walloon Region. Its aim is to
disseminate Microelectronics thanks to cooperation between industries and
universities.

In September 1997, Louvain-la-Neuve will celebrate its 25th birthday. This
Belgium's youngest city is the site of the Université Catholique de Louvain
(UCL), founded in 1425. Louvain-la-Neuve has as its prime objective the
complete functioning of a modern university through the purposeful
integration of town and university. The town itself strives to assure
quality in its urban modern life by maintaining an old town atmosphere: pedestrians are given priority, and are insulated from automobile traffic,
all is designed on a human scale to facilitate personnal contacts, green belts surround the town, social and cultural facilities are provided.
How to reach Louvain-la-Neuve
Louvain-la-Neuve is about 25 km from Brussels, in the direction of Namur (South-East).
By car:
From Brussels: Take the E411 motorway towards Namur-Luxembourg. At Exit 7,
"Louvain-la-Neuve", follow the N4, and after 2.5 km, turn right off the N4
at the second roundabout (Louvain-la-Neuve Centre).
From Namur: Take the E411 motorway towards Brussels. At exit 9,
"Corroy-le-Grand/Louvain-la-Neuve", turn left towards the N4. Turn right on
the N4, and left it on the first roundabout (Louvain-la-Neuve Centre).
By train: From any station in Brussels, ask for a ticket to
"Louvain-la-Neuve-Université" (NOT Louvain/Leuven), and take the
Brussels-Ottignies-Namur-Luxembourg line.
If you want to go by taxi from the station to your hotel in
Louvain-la-Neuve or in Wavre, ask for a ticket to "Ottignies"
(the station 5 minutes before Louvain-la-Neuve), and ask there for a taxi.
By plane:
Fly to Brussels National Airport (Zaventhem). The airport is linked to
Brussels (Central or North station) by a train service every 20 minutes
(10 minutes travel). From these stations you could reach Louvain-la-Neuve
by train (2 trains per hour, about 30 minutes travel). A taxi from the
airport to Louvain-la-Neuve costs approximately 2 500 BEF.
Conference place
The conference place is in the building of the "Institut
d'Administration et de Gestion" (IAG), entrance from the Place
Rabelais, in the center of Louvain-la-Neuve, close to the Theatre Jean
Villar, and 2 minutes walking from the railwaystation. Louvain-la-Neuve is
a pedestrian city, with underground parking areas. Parking P58 is the
closest to the conference place.
