Scope: |
The aim of the seminar is to gather
together colleagues from academia and industry to begin
the process of charting the future evolution of FPL
technology over the next decade or so. It is universally accepted that bigger and faster FPGAs are inevitable and that we are entering the era of system level integration, or systems on chip as it is also known. Using the Semiconductor Industry Associations (SIA) roadmap for semiconductor technologies as an example, the challenge is to produce an initial roadmap that is specific to FPL technology and to fill in as many of the details as possible. This will be done by identifying key component technologies and addressing them with specialist groups, led by expert moderators from industry and academia. We all need to understand as much of what is going on around us as possible. The "bigger picture", offered by embracing a broader perspective based on the contributions of many minds, is critical in assessing the value of each individuals research. Through a series of focussed discussion groups and plenary sessions, the special seminar will afford a unique opportunity to compile the roadmap. |

Location: |
The seminar is being hosted at the
ALBA Centre, in Livingston, in the heart of
Scotlands "Silicon Glen". The ALBA Centre
houses the Institute for System Level
Integration (ISLI) and the Virtual Component Exchange
(VCX). ISLI is the worlds first institute for graduate education, research, and training in system on chip technologies. VCX is the worlds first trading exchange for intellectual property re-use in system on chip designs. VCX is important because the legal and business issues in establishing a market for re-use of intellectual property are every bit as challenging as the purely technical ones. The ALBA project was conceived by Scottish Enterprise and establishes a partnership between Scotlands four leading universities in the areas of electronic engineering and computer science. The universities involved are Edinburgh University, Glasgow University, Heriot-Watt University and the University of Strathclyde. |

| Cost: | Please note that attendance at the seminar (including refreshment and transport to and from the ALBA Centre from the centre of Glasgow) is free of charge. | ||||
